It is useful in determining the load carrying capacity in the field when in place density and water contents are such that the degree of saturation is 80% or greater, when material is cohesion less and coarse grained. Sich that it is not effected by changes in water contents and when the materiel has been in place for considerable time. The loading is effected bgy means of a mechanical load frams which can be fixed to the under side of a truck.

COMPRESSION PROVING RINGS
Proving rings are used for load measurements and are used in outfits of a number of Soil / Cement & Bitumen Testing Equipments like Direct Share Test Apparatus, Triaxil Share Test Apparatus, CBR Test, Unicontained Test, Marshall Test etc.
They are made out of special steel carefully forged to give maximum strength and machined to give highest sensitivity combined with stability to ensure long life and accuracy. When Compressive or tensile load is applied within the elastic range, the proving rings get temporarily deformed. This deformation is measured by a sensitive dial gauge fixed co-axially at the center of proving ring. The dial gauge readings thus obtained versus load applied enable the operator to find out unknown load, just by noteing the dial gauge reading for unknown load. The proving rings have high elasticity and on removing load they regain their original shape provided they are loaded in their elastic limits.
A Dial gauge and plunger anvil are mounted on brackets clamped to the ring body. The dial gauge is held perfectly rigid without the remote chance of shifting due to inadvertent shocks or pressures exerted on it. The dial gauge plunger rests on an adjustable anvil. Proving Rings , from 50 kg to 1,00,000kg capacity provided with 1/2 inch B.S.F femal threads.Loading bosses and a loading ball nipple and steel ball are supplied with each rings.Rings of capacity over 25000kg (or 25 Tonnes) are not thus threaded.Each ring is individually calibrated and supplied with works calibration chart and a carrying case.

TENSION AND COMPRESSION TYPE PROVING RING
Tension Compression Proving Rings are having standard 1/2" (BSF Threads) and for measuring tension , 2 Nos. tension rods having male threads at both ends are supplied.
For measuring loads in compression these tension rods are removed and the ring can be used in usual way.Works calibration charts for tension and with each ring . Supplied complete with tension rods in a carrying case.

For determining the Liquid Limit of soils. This is specially useful to obtain reliable and accurate results for those soils which have low plasitcity index. The percentage moisture contents determined when cone with half angle of 15-30 minutes under a total sliding weight of 148 gm penetrates 25 mm gives the Liquid Limit.
Consolidation test is unidimensional test considered extremely important in soil mechanics. Sample taken from adjacent areas of a single site show different settlement even when tested using same techniques. Soil of similar strength may show varying consolidations. Samples are very carefully prepared and vertical settlement of the specimen in stuarated or drained conditions carefully recorded when known load is applied.
The standard outfit comprises of the following items. Loading unit, maximum capacity 20 kg/cm sq. having a loading yoke connected to a lever arm with a counter balancing adjustment and having a lever ratio of 1:1, the whole assembly being mounted on a sturdy steel frame stand. This is used for determination of in situ dry density of natural or compacted fine grained soil, free from aggregates. A cylindrical cutter is used to extract a sample of the soil with the help of a dolley and rammer. From the weight, density and the moisture, and dry density of the soil is readily calculated.

Dames And Moore Sampler
Highly useful for sampling soils. The sample collects into rings inside the sampler. These rings along with the specimen can be directly placed in a consolidometer cell assembly, thereby reducting the number of operations to extract the sample from a sampler, trimming to size and transferring into the ring etc. The possible disturbance in these operations is eliminated
Consists of a split tube accommodating ten things brass rings 60 mm x 25.4 mm long. A shoe with hardened cutting edge is screwed at one end. A driving head with ball check valve is fitted at the other end. The flaps mounted inside the cutting shoe prevent the cohesion less soil falling down while lifting the sampler.

DEAD WEIGHT TYPE OIL WATER CONSTANT PRESSURE SYSTEM
This device is used to maintain cell pressure constant for a long duration and the system can be used in place of convensional constant pressure system using mercury posts where certain minimum heights are required. Problems like deairiation of pump, leakage of mercury etc. are eleminated in this system. This unit is smaller in volume and can be used in mobile laboratory also. This can maintain pressure in the cell upto 20 kg/cm.sq. Pressure is maintained constant in the system by a balancing calibrated weights on a spindle against a column of oil, operating under constant feedback.
The system consists of an oil pump continuosly driven by an eletric motor during the test period. The internal components are housed in a strong compact housing. The piston on which weights are kept rotates with minimum friction. A transparent Oil Water vessel is provided on transmit pressure to the cell. A hand pump provided facilitates priming and to maintain constant pressure during power failure.

EXTRACTOR FRAME UNIVERSAL (HAND OPERATED)
Designed to extract specimens from almost every type of sampling tube and mould used in solid engineering laboratory or in the field. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally as desired. It has an unique feature that three 38 mm dia sample.
Camprises of a frame designed for screw jack operation, one each of the adaptor plates and plunger adaptors for 38 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm diameters specimens and a stand to obtian imultaneously three 38 mm diamter samples from one 100 mm diameter sample. GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS (PIPETTE METHOD)
The apparatus consists of a sliding panel which moves up and down by means of a screw allowing Anderson pipette fixed to it to be raised or lowered vertically. A sedimentation tube is held by a laboratory clamp provided on the stand below the pipette. The depth of immersion is measured by a scale graduated in mm at the side of the sliding panel. It is designed for application of cell pressures upto 10 kg/cm2 on a triaxial specimen in the triaxial cell. This unit is mostly used in routine which last for about 10 to 15 minutes wherein the variations of cell pressure can be tolerated
The apparatus consists of a pressure chamber which has a flanged top cap fitted with a 10 Kg/cm². Pressure gauge and a schrader valve for pumping in air. LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE
Casagrande method in mechanical form is known as Liquid Limit Method and has been in use for soil mechanics for a number of years. The Liquid Limit data of soils is useful to correlate mechanical properties of soil, such as compressibility and lower shear strength. Liquid limit is the water content at which soil passes from zero strength to an infinitesimal strength, hence the true value of liquid limit cannot be determined. For determination purpose liquid limit is that water content at which a part of soil, cut by a groove of standard dimensions, will flow together for a distance of 1.25 cm under animpact of 25 blows in a standard liquid limit apparatus. The soil at the water content has some strength which is about 0.17 N/cm.sq. (17gms/sq.cm.) At this water content soil just passes from liquid state to plastic state
It consists of a brass cup held on an adjustable bracket. The cup can be adjusted for a fall of 1cm and can be raised and dropped on a rubber base of standard hardness by cam action. Complete with one casegrande grooving tool, one ASTM Grooving tool and a heigh gauge block (Type A of IS 9259)

LOAD TRUSS 20 TONNE CAPACITY
The Truss is of welded 1- girder construction in two halves which can be bolted together when required. The lower chord, the cross-pieces for holding the truss down and the vertical thrust members are all of welded box type construction with two channels enclosing and welded to an I-girder.. They consists of semi cylindrical pieces each held down by 3 feet long steel spikes driven in through holes drilled in the semi cylinder. The spikes enter the ground at about 60 degree to the horizontal, four from each side spaced along the length of the encourage. The cross-pieces are moored to the anchorages by channel straps and bolts. Eight such anchorages are supplied with the 20 tonnes truss. Guy wires with turn-buckless are supplied to keep the truss erect.

This cone is used to find out Viscosity of Bentinite slurry and like material. The Marsh Cone is 6 inch in diameter at the top and 12 inch long, and tapers to join a tube 2 inch long and 3/16 inch inside dia. The capacity of the funnel is 1500 cc. Time in seconds required to flow out 1000 cc of slurry from cone is measured as funnel viscocity of the material

In soil machines Permeability is one of the important Engineering properties, as it governs rate of settlement of saturated compressible soil layer and rate of flow of equifer. Permeability is that property of soil which permits flow of water through its interconnecting voids. The instrument to measure permeability is called permeameter. The results are used for pumping groung water, for functioning sites excavations, design of dams etc. Tests can be performed on remoulded or undisturbed samples using constant head or falling head method.
SOIL PERMEABILITY APPARATUS
The apparatus is used for the laboratory determination of permeability of soils using a constant or a variable head. This test is recommended for soils with co-efficient of permeability in the range of 10 x -3 to 10 x -7cm/sec. The maximum particle size of the soil which can be tested in the mould is 10 mm
The equipment comprises one each: Gun metal mould, 100mm I.D. x 127 mm high x 1000 ml volume. Gun metal mould extension collar, 100 mm dia x 60 mm high for the above mould. Gun metal Drainage base plate with a recess for a porous stone and with an outlet valve. Metallic clamping ring. Each glass tube is longer than 1 meter and has a serrested end at the bottom. To read water head 2 Nos. meter scales are fixed between the tubes. PLATE BEARING TEST
This is for estimating the bearing capacity of shallow foundations in situ and for the design of flexible pavement. In the test procedure a steel plate is subjected to gradually increasing load and settlements of the plates recorded. POINT LOAD INDEX TESTER
Used for testing rock, aggregate and core samples as well as out crop specimen in their original shape. Very useful for rock classification. This is a portable instrument and is useful in the field also. Uniaxial compressive strength for rock specimen can also be predicted approximately.

RAPID MOISTURE METER
For quick determination of moisture content of materials in powder form viz. soil, sand, coal, pottery slip, cement etc. Calcium Carbide when comes in contact with moisture acetylene gas in generate. This principle is used in Rapid Moisture Meter. A weighted quantity of sample is mixed with fixed quantity of Calcium Carbide reagent and the whole mixture is thoroughly skaken in a vessel to which a pressure gauge is fixed. The acetylene gas produced developes pressure and pressure gauge is cablibrated to read percentage moisture. For collecting undistributed samples of 38 mm dia for Triaxial Shear strength and Unconfined Compressive strength either straight from the field or from a sample of larger diameter. The wall thickness is maintained approximately 1.6 mm with an area ratio approximately 17 per cent. Both relieved and undrelieved sampling tubes are available. In the relieved type of tube, the internal diameter is relieved by about 0.5 mm (inside clearance 2%) beyond approx. 19 mm length from the cutting edge of the tube. SHRINKAGE LIMIT APPARATUS

Total stresses when measured in a triaxial cell are more in their nature. Numurous parameters may be measured including back, pressure, pore water pressure and volume change. From these values various engineering properties can be calculated.

UNIVERSAL AUTOMATIC COMPACTOR
It is a motor driven mechanical compactor useful for soil compaction into 100 mm or 150 mm diameter moulds. Two sets of rammers are provided, one of 2.6 and arranged for 310 mm. drop and other 4.9 kg and arranged for 450 mm fall. for comaction soil into 150 mm dia moulds, 100 mm face dia rammers having weight 2.6 kg and 489 kg are used. Where as for 100 mm dia moulds they are of 50 mm dia. The rammer assembly is provided with a ratched and pawl arrangement to lift it from the top of the soil layer. When the rammer reaches the required height the pawl release the rammer which falls freely on soil surface. The release mechanism is operated by an arm moving up and down which is connected to a reduction gear coupled to the motor through another arm. An automatic blow counter fitted to the compactor is used to set the number of blows. LABORATORY VANE SHEAR APPARATUS (HAND OPERATED)
Consists of a torque head adjustable in height by means of a lead screw rotated by a drive wheel to enable the vane to be lowered into the specimen. Rotating of the vane is by means of a hand wheel which operates a worm gear arrangement during upper end of calibrated torsion spring. Vane dia, rod dia, vane size & vane height as per IS specifications. The Vane Shaft is attached through the hollow upper shaft to a resetable pointer, which indicates the angle of torque on a dial graduated in degrees. The dial reading multiplied by spring factor gives the torque. A container for soil sample is also supplied, and a sampling tube of 38mm I.D. & 150mm long can also be used as container. Supplied with set of four springs, one each of approx. 2 kg.cm., 4 kg.cm., 6 kg.cm., and 8 kg.cm. Complete as above in a wooden carrying case
VICKSBERG RENETROMETER / PROVING RING PENETROMETER (WITH OPTICAL VIEWER)
Consists of a study handle under which is fixed a sensitive Proving Ring. An extension piece is fixed to the bottom of the Proving Ring and carries a detachable penetration cone at it tip. Proving ring capacity 100 kg(1 KN) and 0.0002 mm dial gauge provided indicates the penetration load applied. An optical viewer is provided to facilitate reading the dial gauge by the operator. VOLUME CHANGE GAUGE
When conducting traixial tests on soil samples, it is observed that due to internal presssure, the cell expands, soil specimen consolidates resulting in the change of volume. Volume change Gauge is therefore deviced to accurately measure volume changes. This is measured by observing the quantity of water entering or leaving the cell as the cell pressure and axial load are changed it is achieved by the displacement of free surface between the water supplied to the cell and another fluid (paraffin or kerosene). A dye is added to the paraffin for clear demarcation of the interface. The unit consists of a glass graduated tube of the appropriate capacity graduated to parts of a ml.enclosed in a perspex tube sealed by two end caps. The unit is fitted with manifolds and valves which enables it to be used with the triaxial cell and the constant Pressure (Mercury controls) system. The cell pressure can either be directly applied to the cell from the constant pressure system or through the volume change gauge. The graduated glass tube is not subjected to any difference in pressure and its inside is coated with a layer f silicon water repellent to reduce the error in meniscus. There is an arrangement for filling the unit with water and paraffin and a drainage valve is provided in the lower end cap. The whole assembly is mounted on a panel suitable for wall mounting. The manifold with valves enable the flow of fluid in the burettes to be reserved when the prarffin interfaces reach their limits in the burettes, the maximum capacity of measurement being only limited by the capacity of the mercury pots. The two burettes, enable the reduction in error in meniscus reading due to reversal of flow, the average of the two burettes being always taken as the volume change reading
